Avoid Ransomware
Ransomware launched on a system encrypts all user files and locks out the user with a demand note for anonymous online payment to restore access. The Uganda National CERT-UG/CC at NITA-U rates the severity of this issue as HIGH due to the potential for loss of data when compromised. It is important to note that chances of recovery of encrypted data are very slim especially with the latest strains of ransomware. How to avoid this:
- Keep an up to date back-up of all your data. This will help you recover your data since making payment is not advised
- Ensure that all systems are patched up (especially the browsers and all its plugins) – good time to get off Windows 7 and upgrade to Windows 10
- Ensure effective use of effective anti-virus solutions on your devices
- Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments within e-mails from unknown people or from companies making offers too good to be true
